A new design from a small German company could make a lathe a bit easier to work with and even more durable, a new video shows.
Z-axis-based lathes have long been an important part of the machine tooling industry, but the Z-Axis System (ZAS) by Verein is the first lathe with an actual 3-axis (Z-axis) design.
The lathe features a unique mechanism for rotating the machine parts with a very small amount of power, which also includes a large motor that moves the entire tool to the next position in the process.
The design is called the ZIGZAG Machine and it can be ordered for around $20, according to Vereins website.
It’s an interesting development for the lathe, but Vereinen is not the only company working on a Z-based design.
In April, the company unveiled the ZAGA2 Z-Tec, which is a 3-Axle design that’s also available with an extra axis.
Vereining is hoping to take this design and make it into a real-world product sometime in 2018.
